Oceanpal® R3

Oceanpal® is an economic and innovative instrument based on the use of the freely available Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals. The instrument is tuned to make use of signals from the GPS, GALILEO, Beidou, IRNSS and GLONASS constellations. Using the direct GNSS signals and their reflection on earth Oceanpal can measure water properties (level, wind and waves) and land parameters (soil moisture, vegetation or biomass) for a variety of applications.

The concept

Oceanpal detects and tracks the freely available signals in the direct channel (which works as a master) and blindly dispreads the reflected signals in the reflected (slave) channel. The result of this processing is a set of direct and reflected electromagnetic field time series for each satellite in view, plus some ancillary information, such as the satellite pseudorandom noise code (PRN) numbers and GPS time references, among others.

The data products provided by Oceanpal R3 is organized in different levels:

  • Raw data: Direct and reflected GNSS signals down- converted in IF and digitized.
  • L0: Correlation waveforms for each satellite. Complex interferometric field for each satellite.
  • L1: SWH Altimetric observables for each satellite.
  • L2: SWH and Altimetric estimation integrated from all the satellites.

Ocean Applications

Above sea surface, Oceanpal provides operational remote sensing solution to extract sea state (wave height) and sea level information without contact with the water.
Oceanpal® is characterized by a very low maintenance requirement, when compare to other current instruments measuring significant wave height or sea level. Oceanographic buoys which use accelerometers and magnetic compass or GPS buoy are in contact with the sea water, which implies costly infrastructure and costly and frequent maintenance operations. When talking about X-band Radars used to measure wave height, peak wave period, mean wave period, and wave direction, or HF radars capable of measuring wave spectra and currents, both of them are by far more expensive than the proposed instrument (although the range of these instruments is different from the range of Oceanpal®).
